Supernatural News: The Week That Was - February 2 Edition.

Sorry! I'm a bit tardy with this week's Supernatural News wrap up! I've had a crazy week with stupid life stuff. (Stupid life getting in the way of what's important...SUPERNATURAL!).

I'll kick off this past week's news with more fantastic ratings!

"Sharp Teeth" was another ratings bonanza! Hitting a 1.2 with 2.79million viewers! A 1.2!

It was the most watched episode since October 2010 and the highest teen's ratings since February 2009!

Um. This is season 9 guys, we're seriously not supposed to be doing this!

This is from TV By The Numbers

"Last night's Supernatural was the series' most watched (2.79M) episode since 10/15/2010. It matched its season highs in A18-34 (1.1/3), A18-49 (1.2/3), and W18-34 (1.4/4), and had its best W18-49 since 5/13/10 (1.4/3).

It was Supernatural's best rating among teens (1.6/6) since 2/5/09 and Matched its second best female teen rating ever on The CW (2.1/7)"

"Over on the CW, which did not air the State of the Union...

At 9 p.m., as the only entertainment programming against the address, Supernatural (1.2 adults) lifted from last week's showing to match a season high and hit its biggest viewership (2.8 million) since 2010. The network posted a nightly average of a 1.1 rating among adults 18-49 and 2.5 million viewers."

Nice work, Little Show That Could!

On the Nielsen Twitter Rankings, Supernatural came in the 4th most tweeted about show of the week! (Remember to #tag people!)

These twitter rankings don't go towards ratings numbers, but they are an excellent tool for the network and advertisers for better understanding and targeting specific audience groups via online content, promoted tweets etc. and can give advertisers insight into possible program audiences which can help with content placement. I'm a true believer in Social Media interaction being an important part of the television viewing research landscape.

And just to wrap up "Sharp Teeth" here are a couple of behind the scenes photos from the episode via guest stars.

Here's something to be proud of! The Supernatural episode "LARP and the Real Girl" has been nominated for a GLAAD Media award. The GLAAD Media Awards recognise and honour media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.

This is the 3rd GLAAD nomination for Supernatural. Previous episodes nominated were Ghostfacers in 2009, which featured gay Ghostfacers intern Corbett and The Real Ghostbusters in 2010 which featured gay LARPing couple, Demian and Barnes.

We should all be proud of our show.

There was also a whole lot of new information on the Supernatural spinoff! We now have a title: "Supernatural: Tribes". We know that the pilot is being produced as part of Supernatural season 9. Episode 9.20 - written by Andrew Dabb and directed by Bob Singer - will be what is called a "backdoor" pilot and will introduce characters that will then spinoff into the new show.

"Supernatural: Tribes will be set in Chicago and centre around 5 warring and powerful monster families and a Hunter named, Ennis Roth. The Ennis Roth character will come in contact with Sam and Dean in Supernatural episode 9.20 and be introduced to the hunting life.

There's more information in my post here.

This week we also got the casting news via TV|Line:

ENNIS ROTH | The de-facto star of the potential series, Ennis is “likeable, strong-willed, resolute, with a strong sense of justice.” He’s the son of a cop who grew up in poverty. He’s en route to the police academy himself when someone he is close to is murdered — presumably by some kind of monster. He meets up with Sam and Dean and “learns the staggering truth” that Chicago is run by five families of monsters (including, but perhaps not limited to, werewolves and shape shifters). And with that, a new monster-hunter is born. Fun fact: Producers are looking to fill this role with an African-American actor in his early 20s.
DAVID HAYDEN | A shape-shifter from one of Chicago’s ruling monster families. He’s been living as a human for some time, but a tragedy propels him back into the life. David is in his early 20s.
MARGO HAYDEN | David’s “professional, strong-willed, determined, ambitious” shape-shifter sister. She’s an “ex-punk rocker gone corporate” who sets out to be the new head of the family in the wake of a tragedy. Margo is in her early 20s.
VIOLET DURANT | A werewolf and part of the wealthy, powerful Durant family. In a twist right out of West Side Story, the early-twentysomething is hot for family rival David (see above), but their love is forbidden.
JULIAN DURANT | Violet’s “savagely handsome, strong, arrogant” twentysomething brother and Ennis’ arch nemesis.
FREDDIE COSTA | A world-weary copy in his 30s, Freddie has a soft spot in his heart for Ennis (he knew his dad back in the day). Fun fact: Freddie’s got a secret.

This pilot has been ordered, so is now officially on the slate for the CW's 2014 pilot schedule.

What are your thoughts? Definitely an ensemble show!

Jenny Klein - no not the one with the beating hearts cupcakes but her namesake, the Supernatural writer - headed to Vancouver this week to watch her episode being filmed. This is the episode with the Ghostfacers' return!

Remember these guys!

Jenny got a tour of the MoL bunker and posted some cool photos on her twitter! Thanks for sharing these great snaps, Jenny!

Last week, some fans managed to catch some filming and had a great experience!

You can read all about it here at gabrielsfeatherybutt.tumblr but long story short - the guys went over and met the fans and were nice enough to take a photo with them! But read the story too, because it's super cute.

And because I thought it might be nice to end on a sweet tweet from Jared...

Here's a lovely photo of his sons, Thomas and Shepherd, that he shared with us. Now don't tell me this doesn't give you all sorts of Sam and Dean feels! As Jules said to me the other day, Gen better stay out of the nursery in six months time!

And that my friends, is all the Supernatural news fit to print!

Have a wonderful Winchestery week everyone!

The Light On Spoliers, Heavy on Squee Preview of Supernatural 9.12 "Sharp Teeth"

Huh.

I feel like this episode is being kept a secret from us or something! Mainly because this week there was no sneak peek released. At least not yet.

Did they think it would be too spoilery? Why? What happens? WHAT? WHAT HAPPENS?

*panics alittle*

Geesh. It makes me want this episode even more than I already did... and that is A LOT (as you can probably tell.)

So what do we know? How about we look at the synopsis.

GARTH RETURNS - After finding out that Garth (guest star DJ Qualls) is in the hospital, Sam and Dean go to check on him. Still carrying the guilt over Kevin, Dean lays into Garth about disappearing and demands to know where he's been. Garth makes an excuse and then hightails it away from the guys. Confused as to why Garth would run from them, Sam and Dean do some investigating and are stunned by what they find. John Showalter directed the episode written by Adam Glass (912).

Great team! John Showalter last directed the opening episode, "I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here", which was a cracker and Adam... well I think we're all pretty versed with Adam's work and wonderful interaction with the fandom. He's a true Supernatural fanboy. Whether you dig his stuff or not, you can't doubt that. For me, "Bad Boys" has been an episode highlight of the past few seasons, harking back to all the things that made me fall in love with this show and these glorious brothers. (If you didn't read my love filled review of "Bad Boys" check it out here.) So I'm looking forward to seeing what Adam does with our favourite brodependent duo, what with them being in such an icky place emotionally and all. We know that they aren't going to repair their relationship overnight, but here's hoping they at least takes steps towards understanding. If Adam's teasing tweets are anything to go by, I think we're in for a world of feels!

The boys finally air it all out. Plenty of boy drama. OH YES! I hope they do... But not all yelly and punchy. Please not yelly or punchy.

Anyhoo, let's look at the one measly 20 second promo!

Do you think the CW would actually pop a major plot point in a promo? Well, probably, they have before, though I have a sneaking suspicion that we're going to find out that there's a bit more to Garth's "I'm a werewolf" statement.

But to be honest...all I see is the Winchesters kicking down a door TOGETHER.

Hey, at least their talking.

Now, this is the promo that was released before the end of hellatus a few weeks back, that has footage from the first 3 episodes. I'm including it, because there's some stuff from "Sharp Teeth" in here. Check it out.

So Garth gets hit by a car and the brothers go to see him in hospital. Do you think that they get to him independently of each other? Like maybe someone from the hospital calls one of them and that brother calls the other? Like in a family crisis. Or does Garth call them? Just. I want to know all right? Because once again, all I see is the Winchesters TOGETHER.

Praise be to Chuck. Let's hope they stay together so they can damn well work out their crap! No more stowing it!

One thing I have to say, Garth has always been an insightful guy when it comes to the brothers and he has in the past, pointed things out to each of them about their relationship. And he manages to do it in an awesome non-confrontational way. So I have hopes that Garth will be another person on the outside of the brother's relationship who looks in and gives them a different perspective. Sooner or later they've got to listen, right? RIGHT?

Okay... we also got some promo pics today.

SPOILER ALERT... THEY'RE HOT!

Told ya! You can check out the rest of the promo pics (and my ridiculous running commentary) here.

Now, if by some chance we get a sneak peek late in the day I shall add it. And of course, I shall add the CHCH promo when/if it drops!

So what are your thoughts?

  • Is Garth really a werewolf?
  • If he is, how do you think the bros will handle it?
  • How do you think Sam and Dean come back together?
  • Do you think Sam will take one of the cars from the bunker garage? He has to get places!
  • Do you think Dean will go back to the bunker?
  • Do you think the brothers will actually TALK?
  • Is this the beginning of the long road back to where we thought they were at the end of "Sacrifice" GAH!
  • Will I cryyyyyyyy?

Let me know your thinky thoughts!

Eeeeee! New Supernatural!
-sweetondean

STOP THE PRESSES

Here's the CHCH promo!

Um. Dramatic music much? Good grief. Sorry, promo producer coming out on me!

Not much here...

I'm still thinking there's more than meets the eye to the Garth is a werewolf thing. Yes/Yes? Yes/No?

NOT LONG NOW AND WE'LL KNOW!

Woohoo!
-sweetondean (again)

P.S. In case you're jonesing for more, here's a spoilery interview with DJ via Zap2it. It is pretty spoilery about a couple of aspects of this episode (not the werewolf stuff though), so clickity click at your own peril! Read it here.

Spoilers Sweeties! Promo Pics - Supernatural 9.12 "Sharp Teeth"

Finally! Some promo pics from the next episode! Next being like TOMORROW. Geesh CW, way to make us wait!

Of course... 9.12 "Sharp Teeth" has none other than Garth as our returning character/possible monster of the week.

Enjoy...and I do mean enjoy...these pics!

Aww. Look at that face.

PHWOAR LOOK AT THAT FACE!
I simply have no words for this photo of Dean. Wait... yeah I do... "g"
(Okay I also have the words, never shave.)

My statement from previous photo continues here.

For some reason I'm hearing "Hisssss".  Probably not...

Ruh-Roh. On a more intelligent note... I like that shirt and Sam's hair is looking glorious as usual!

It is official. Dean Winchester wants to kill me. Kill me with hotness.

Think she's going to tie Sammy up too? I'm confusing reality with porn again aren't I? No wait, I'm confusing...never mind.

Look, that dude has to hold on to the fence while talking to Sam, else he'd faint from the sight of the glorious hair (and everything else).

Those pics were pretty. I'm going to love this episode. Wait. I love every episode. (Except maybe that Mannequin one)

-sweetondean

BUT WAIT...THERE'S MORE!

Lookey what just showed up! A few more pics from the episode.

As someone who doesn't eat meat...this is quite possibly my worst dinner party nightmare! (Though I'd suffer it for Dean!)

Just don't ask them to toss you a bread roll Dean! Ewwwww!

Um. No midnight snack for you Dean!
There was a shot very similar to this in "Dog Dean Afternoon". Seems Dean spends a lot of the time gazing into refrigerators!

So it looks like Dean gets to attend an awkward werewolf family dinner!
Bet you their flatware is not made of silver! Ha!

Spoilers Sweeties! Official synopsis - Supernatural 9.12 "Sharp Teeth"

Here's the official synopsis for 9.12 "Sharp Teeth".

If you remember, the new season 9 promo had Garth in it, so now we know that promo comprised the first 3 episodes of the return season.

GARTH RETURNS - After finding out that Garth (guest star DJ Qualls) is in the hospital, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) go to check on him.

Ooooo! So where has Garth been do you think? What are the theories? What do you think the title "Sharp Teeth" refers to?

Sounds like Dean is going to be even more concerned with keeping his friends and loved ones close than usual after what happened with Kevin (and Sam).

Great director writer team of John Showalter and Adam Glass! John last directed the season opener, "I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here".

The first 3 episodes of the new season look like they're going to be fantastic!

Also, I just love that Sam and Dean are together... Love. LOVE I TELLS YA! Let's hope that they're emotionally together too...

Yay!

Let me know your Garth/title theories!

Supernatural's "Party on, Garth" and SQUEE Surprise!!!

THEN

Wow, I feel stupid. I never connected DJ Quall's awesome Garth with the "how are you still alive" hunter from "Weekend at Bobby's." Man, I love seeing Bobby, even in flashback.

NOW

This campfire thing reminds me a little of "Wendigo" even though they didn't do campfire ghost stories. (Coincidentally, That Haley Girl from "Wendigo" was on tonight's episode of Fringe!)

Anyone who saw the previews knows what's coming. Wasted Trevor sees/hears something in the woods. He runs off, and when his brother goes after him, he finds a gruesome scene. Nice touch with the down from his vest floating around.

Oh, yeah, Garth appears to Bell Biv Devoe's "Poison," which somehow fits him very well. He approaches two of the women from the campfire, who dis him until he throws his badge and gets amusingly sudden respect. I love when dorks rule! They tell Garth about the real Jenny Greentree. He salts and burns her: "You've been Garthed." Bell Biv Devoe come back, while Garth hits himself in the face with his jacket when he tosses it over his shoulder, and the small grave fire gets bigger and bigger. Love it!

Trevor's brother is getting drunk in the woods now. You don't have to have seen the preview to know something bad is going to happen. Do you think he has salt rounds in his shotgun? Oh, wait, I think that's a rifle. He's "hunting" his brother's killer, but he gets hunted.

Garth "hearts you more"--Number One (my oldest daughter) thinks he was talking to Becky. What do you think? Garth hears about Trevor's brother and is angry. "I Garthed her!"

Finally, we get to Sam and Dean. Dean's getting an update from the bitch Meg. Apparently, Cas is still catatonic or something close. Dean asks Sam how his custard is. Sam says it's getting better, but he feels guilty for passing on the crazy. Dean's phone interrupts him, and it's Garth. How did I know Dean wouldn't remember him right away?

Fed Dean and Fed Sam show up at the morgue, and Corporal Brown--James Brown, ha!--is there to pay respects to his cousin, but clearly doesn't know the victims were brothers. An exasperated Sam takes over, checking the files and doing quick research. Dean asks if he's allergic to a suit, but Garth just looks good in a uniform. Doesn't everyone?

Dean gets EMF when Garth hadn't, but the details point to monster chow rather than ghost. A witness says it was invisible, so Dean goes with invisible ghost werewolf. Sam finds Thighslapper Ale (beverage for douchebags), and the owner is the father to the dead brothers. Dean assures Sam that Garth grows on ya. (He does, Sam! Give him a chance!)

The manager of the brewery is the sister. The place is run by two guys, with a third partner recently dead. I'm going to quickly encapsulate the storyline here so I can get to the good stuff. Sam, Dean, and Garth trace clues and family intricacies to learn that:

Three partners in the business, two want to sell to a giant distributor, one doesn't, he committed suicide a couple of months ago. But he gave them a gift "that would show them I forgive them," a saki bottle from Japan containing an alcohol spirit that was programmed to go after the kids of the ousting partners. I don't know why it kills the wife/mother instead of the little girl who accidentally drank from her mother's screwdriver, but probably they had the girl witness the trauma instead of dying herself because they know my husband's rule about quitting shows that do harm to kids.

I love that Sam and Dean consult, what, a sushi chef? He reads the curse on the box (and Dean very nicely pays him for his time) and later helps Dean bless a samurai sword with spring water poured from a plastic bottle. Dirty, but it works! Garth, who's not as hapless as he seems, figures out that Ray's son is the company janitor. He also saves Sam and Dean by tazing Ray when he discovers Sam and Dean drunk in the office, watching security footage of the spirit being set free.

Garth goes to the company (drunk on mini bar bottles) and sees the spirit stalking the unrecognized son. Sam, who's been getting drunk while watching out for the older sister, has to take a cab to the company. Dean meets them there with the sword, but he's the only one sober enough to fight the thing, but too sober to see it. (Sam to Dean when they got drunk in the office: "Can you even get drunk anymore? It's kind of like drinking a vitamin." Another good line: Drunk Sam saying the spirit followed the kid to the place with all the thingies. Dean thought that was smart. I love drunk Dean!)

Garth gets drunk on one bottle of beer. "Party on Garth." He doesn't usually drink beer because it messes with his depth perception, especially when he skinny dips. LOL He gets the young daughter's story out of her with a sock puppet, Mr. Fizzles. He also figures out that Bobby's old flask set off the EMF meter.

And that's the stuff that's REALLY good. Garth thinks Bobby might be haunting them. Sam admits that after the beer disappeared, he used a talking board to try to contact Bobby. It didn't work, or he'd have told Dean. But during the battle, the spirit throws Garth through a wall (again) and Sam against a wall (knocking him out) and knocks the sword from Dean's hand. Dean's a bit desperate, with Sam knocked out, the kid useless, and the sword five feet away...until it slides across the floor, right into his hand.

Dean's convinced now. He thinks he's alone and begs Bobby to do something. God, Jenson does tortured well. Sam, however, still needs a haircut. I mean, Sam hears Dean, but nothing happens. Later, after they say goodbye to Garth (I love the hugs...and the music!), we have this huge buildup of anticipation as Sam confronts Dean about the Bobby thing. Dean tries to blow it off, calling it his imagination, but Sam pushes. Dean catalogs the sword, the beer, the page, the book. But Sam thinks regular people see people they've lost all the time, too. They're actually close to normal.

I'm dying here!

Dean says "who knows more about being a ghost than Bobby?" Of course Bobby would let them know. They leave the motel room...come on come on come on...the camera pans over...

BOBBBYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!

Dean goes back inside, and kills us by glancing around, landing his eyes on something, and saying "there you are." Bobby thinks he sees him, but Dean just came back for the flask.

"I'm right here, ya idjit!" A gray-looking, heartbroken Bobby ends with "Balls!"

GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

But OMG, that preview! I can't believe we have to wait three more friggin' weeks!

I love being unspoiled. I don't know if there were hints in any of the interviews I avoided, but I had no clue he'd actually show up and prove right those of us who called "he chose to stay" from the last fadeout on "Death's Door."

As a classic episode, I liked this one. I like Garth (which means we'll get three episodes with him next season and then he'll die) and the new spirit and the down-and-dirty blessing ritual and even the way figuring out what was happening was kind of like an episode of Castle or something, with all the family intrigues and unseen connections.

But as a Bobby reveal, it was even better. I made some strangled screaming noises when it happened. I think my family was ready to perform CPR on me (or make me Cas's roommate).

After this next hiatus, we should get the last five episodes all in a row. Which is nice, but it makes me sad that it's almost over when it feels like it just started.

What did you think?

The Rest of the Season Approaches...

All of the episode titles for the rest of the season have been revealed. Of course, that doesn't mean they're not subject to change, but here's what we have right now:

“Out With The Old” (March 16)

“The Born-Again Identity” (March 23)

“Party On, Garth” (March 30)

“Of Grave Importance” (7.19)

“The Girl With The Dungeons And Dragons Tattoo" (7.20)

“Reading Is Fundamental” (7.21)

“There Will Be Blood” (7.22)

“Get Dick” (7.23/season finale)

I love all the plays-on-words. I have, as usual, been avoiding spoilers, but I've caught some of the returning character/actor buzz. We'll be getting Castiel, Garth (DJ Qualls), and Meg back. Who else would you like to see? I'd love to see the professor who had the dragon-killing blade. And, of course, BOBBY. Do you think they'd be able to keep that one hush-hush? Jim Beaver could be exaggerating the length of the shoot for the AbomSno movie he's doing.

Of course, they could be teasing us with the beer and Greek paper stuff. That would kill me if they were just teasing us.

No word yet on season 8. How many of you think we'll get it?
